The McNeil family originated in the ancient Scottish kingdom of Dalriada. The name is derived from the personal name Neil, which means “son of Neil”. The earliest records of the McNeil family come from Barra, Gigha, and Colonsay, and it is associated with the Clan MacNeill, which has historically been associated with the island of Barra in the outer Hebrides. Interestingly, the first ancestor of the McNeil family was a Laird of Blarekanne in the 1370s. His son, Torquil of Taynish, started the MacNeill house of Colonsay on Colonsay.
